Formed by the collision industry in 1979, I-CAR is an international, not-for-profit training organization. All I-CAR activities and resources focus on helping the industry achieve a level of technical training. I-CAR’s vision for the industry is: Every person in the collision industry has the necessary technical knowledge and skills relevant to their position to ensure a complete and safe repair. I-CAR develops and delivers technical training programs to professionals in all areas of the collision industry. In addition, I-CAR provides a communication forum for anyone interested in proper collision repair.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was formed in 1972. ASE’s mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair through the testing and certification of repair and service programs. After providing proof of relevant work experience, prospective candidates register for one or more of ASE's 40 plus exams. Testing is grouped into specialties to include collision repair and collision damage estimating. These tests are conducted twice a year, and are not easy. One of every three candidates tested fail. Upon certification, ASE technicians must have their credentials retested every 5 years to remain certified.
